(this is my entry for the contest. I was torn between doing three characters, in the end Sonia won. I worked really hard on this, i feel a bit rusty writing fanfics again but i think that maybe it helped me get back into it. Anyways enjoy)
The castle was as quiet as ever, though that was understandable, based on where it was. The castle of the White family was built on a hill that overlooked a small village. There were times the villagers made her feel uneasy. However, after a few years, the looks no longer bothered her.
The headmistress had called a vacation. Sonia had decided to spend her vacation at her castle home that she was very happy to return to. Despite what she said, Sonia did love her home and her castle. It was her second day here, and while excited, Sonia felt that something was missing. The garden outside was where Sweetie Belle spent most of her time, and was there at the moment resting in a field of small daisies. Her mother at the moment was working hard in the kitchen. Most likely starting ahead to make a wonderful dinner for the family. Sonia noticed that her mother always went all out when the whole family was together. The animal friends were helping and a familiar song filled Sonia’s head as she walked to the library.
“So hum a merry tune.” Sonia sang softly as the rest of the words became a soft hum on her tongue.
It was not one of her favorite songs of her mother’s but it was one that made the day feel a bit more cheery. The young girl opened the door of the library with a big smile. She had a mission, one that she was meaning to complete by the end of her vacation. Her father had spent many days in the library as a child and it clearly showed. The shelves were filled with books of all genres. It was not as big as the one in the Beast’s castle. That one was rumored to be where the biggest library in the kingdom was. There were so many books that Sonia didn’t know where to start.
Her footsteps echoed through the hall as her blue gaze wandered the books, looking for anything with answers.
----
“Sweetheart, what are you looking for?” Sonia’s head shot up from a book to see her father looking at her.
Her blue gaze fell from her father to the many books that now remained and circled the floor around her. None held the answer. How long had she been there? It couldn’t have been more than an hour.
“Father, do we have any books about our history?” Sonia asked titling her head.
His father titled his head to the side before looking at the books on the floor. They were obviously historic but something told him that it wasn’t what his daughter was looking for. There was a gleam in her eyes that caused him to smile.
“Our history?” he asked if only to humor her.
“Well, rather Mother’s. She doesn’t tell me anything.” A pout formed on her face. “Does she hate me?”
“Of course not, Sweetie.” Her father chuckled, wherever his daughter got that idea was beyond him. “She’s just…very sensitive about her history,” he paused as his daughter seemed to look more and more upset. “However, I do know where you can find out.”
Sonia’s pout faded into a big smile that could have covered her whole face. “Oh wonderful, where is it?” She asked, no longer hiding the joy.
“Well, it’s not a book, but rather a certain group of people.” This caused Sonia to tilt her head to the side with confusion. A laugh escaped his mouth. “If you follow the road, you will come across a cottage. That’s where you will find your answer.”
Sonia jumped in excitement before hugging her father. “Oh, thank you father.” She started to run out of the library before turning around. “Oh and father…”
“I won’t tell your mother, I promise.”
With one last smile from his daughter, the king watched as she disappeared from the library. He shook his head while a smile remained on his face.
----
Sonia stared at the small cottage in front of her, Sweetie Belle beside her. The cottage looked almost like a dollhouse. Yet it was still beautiful and lovely in its own way. This is where she would find her answers?
“Here goes Sweetie Belle,” the unicorn looked up at her as she took a deep breath, before knocking on the door.
Silence met her, maybe the owners of the house weren’t home. That was always a possibility, but what if she hadn’t knocked loud enough. Maybe they didn’t hear her. She raised her hand to the door again. Knock! Knock! Knock!
“What’s with all the ruckus!” a grumpy voice sounded from the other side of the door right before it swung open.
Sonia almost had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. In front of her, was a rather small man? No, that wasn’t right. A dwarf? A dwarf stood in front of her. This particular dwarf had a red nose and a long white beard. He was wearing a red coat and a brown hat.
“Well, what are you looking at?” he asked, his voice hard and cold. “If you don’t want something get out!”
“Actually I…. “Sonia opened her mouth to speak when the man glared at her.
“Well then. What?” the man snapped. “Spit it out!”
“Grumpy!” Another dwarf appeared behind him, this one wore glasses. Upon further inspection Sonia could see that there were not just two dwarves but rather 5 more behind, looking at her curiously.
“Why, you are all little men!” Sonia was surprised.
The dwarf with glasses couldn’t help, but smile almost as if he had heard the line before.
“Yes, we are little men. Is that all you want? Then get out!” Grumpy muttered.
The dwarf with the glasses shot him a glare before turning back to Sonia. “Yes, how can we help you my dear?”
Sonia gave a small curtsy. “I was told by my father that you would hold answers to something I am looking for?”
The dwarves looked at each other curiously. Finally, the one with the glasses asked the question which seemed to be on their minds. “And who might you be my dear?”
“Ah, how silly of me. I’m Sonia White at your service!” she gave another curtsy.
“Sonia White! Like the Snow White?” A happy dwarf practically shoved Grumpy out of the way. “Doc, she has the same name as Snow!”
“You mean to say that you are the Q-Q-Queen’s daughter.” Doc asked or rather stuttered.
“Uh yes, and my father told me that you would have some answers about my mother’s history?” Sonia asked, hoping that they would.
“Of course, we do. Come in. Come in.” Doc offered the girl inside.
The cottage looked even more like a dollhouse on the inside than on the out. The furniture looked like the perfect size for these little men and while it wasn’t the neatest place in the world. Yet if the dwarves called it home, then Sonia would make no qualms about it. Upon finding the perfect chair for herself, the dwarves introduced themselves as Doc, Happy, Grumpy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, and the mute one named Dopey.
Sweetie Belle had taken a-liking to Dopey and was chewing on his ear much to the dwarf’s dismay. Sonia giggled before turning. “So, can you tell me about my mother?” she asked.
“Of course we can.” Doc said, clearly taking charge of the meeting. “Before your mother became queen, she lived with her stepmother,”
“The Evil Queen.” Grumpy said with a huff. He clearly was holding a strong dislike for the woman.
Sonia did know of the Evil Queen, but only by the children she had. Rarity was the youngest, she didn’t have an evil bone in her body. Shinji, the eldest son of the Queen looked scary but Sonia doubted he would do something that horrible. Was the Evil Queen as evil as they claimed? The girl decided against telling the dwarves about them.
“Yes, by golly! She is a mean one that Evil Queen.” Happy said with a glare. “She was jealous of your mother’s beauty.”
The others nodded in agreement. Sonia had also heard of this, that her mother had once been called the Fairest of them all. Many had passed that title onto her daughter after Sonia was born.
“She was jealous?” Sonia asked.
“That’s right, the Evil Queen wanted to be the fairest maiden of them all,” Doc said, “So much so that she sent a huntsman out to kill your mother and bring that nasty witch her heart.”
Sonia felt sick, she had never heard about that. Did someone really hate her mother that much because of beauty, it was not something that should have happened. Her gaze went back to the dwarves, trying to hide her disgust.
“But the huntsman spared your mother and sent her into the woods. Where she found us,” Bashful said. “You are just as purdy as she is.” His cheeks turning bright red.
“We took care of your mother, and kept her safe, until one day.” Doc paused.
“I told her not to be opening the door to strangers but she didn’t listen.” Grumpy said.
Doc shook his head and continued the story about how the Evil Queen had used magic to disguise herself as an old woman, and tricked her mother to opening the door for her. For her kindness, Snow was given an apple. Not just any apple. A poison apple.
“That would explain why she doesn’t like apples.” Sonia gave a small murmur under her breath.
“She was asleep for a long time, we thought she was dead.” Happy said. ‘But then your father, came by and kissed her. Then she awoke. We have never been so happy and relieved in our lives. We all loved your mother.”
Sonia didn’t realize how much her mother had gone through. She had given her mother so much trouble for being so protective, now she understood. No way would something like that fade from her mom’s memory. Her mother’s protective side was reasonable now.
“Does that help you Sonia?” Doc asked, breaking her out of her thoughts.
“Ah yes, thank you.” Standing up, the young princess glanced at the clock and realized it was almost time for supper. “Thank you, this was very helpful.”
“You’ll come by and see us again. Won’t ya?” Sleepy yawned.
Sonia smiled. “Of course, I will.” She tapped her knee and Sweetie Belle came running to her side, exiting the house, Sonia gave a small wave to the dwarves.
“You better be careful!” Grumpy said, “Don’t be causing trouble like your mom did.”
Sonia gave a small laugh before waving and heading back to the castle with Sweetie Belle at her side. The moment she arrived back at the castle, she was welcomed by the smell of delicious soup and for desert gooseberry pie filled the room. Her favorite!
“Sonia, there you are. Where have you been?” her mother asked as she wiped her hands on her apron.
There was no reason for her mother to worry. Instead Sonia just walked over and hugged her.
“Oh, nowhere special mother. Just visiting some old friends.”
